Sounds like a pain to try and get a straight answer to your question from them guys. I wish that I could give you an answer, but I have very little knowledge of this type of stuff. I'll see if Gizmo can give you some type of answer.

"need a 5 speed cassette, and a couple other cassette questions"
Philipine;
I'm afraid I won't be much help but her's my .02 (and worth about that much) Like you, most of my tinkering has been with old school freewheels and not too much with cassettes. I think if you truly want a five speed cassette it could be built up with the right combination spacers and cogs but elusive unless you have an unlimited pile of matching cassettes to disassemble for parts, a very understanding LBS, and or deep pockets. You would likely still need to use the (system) correct shifters with the stops adjusted to prevent over shifting on either end of your "new" 5 speed cassette.
I think most indexed shifters are proprietary to their own system components and won't readily work with different systems. I don't know if you can readily convert most newer index shifters to work in a friction mode. That said, the indexing in most newer index systems, is in the shifters not the derailiers, so you should be able to use an old school friction shifter with newer derailiers. The derailier only sees the movement of the cable and responds accordingly.
I hope that answers or at least helps answer you questions. If I've only confused things I apologize.

i got it mostly worked out. i took the detent ball out and worked with the washers some, so now it's a friction shifter. i think i'll be able to get it down to a 7 speed and make it work. still parts gahtering.
will the old threads come back? i thought i remembered you saying that before. i haven't done much, but i've been wondering if the old threads will come back to continue, or just have to start new ones.

Good deal, I'm glad it's working for you. I watch the donor bikes I pick up and hang on to any friction type shifters I find just for this sort of thing. Personally I've never had trouble shifting without the "convenience" of indexing and like the ability to fine tune a shift on the run to quiet a noisy chain. Of course I grew up with friction shifting and tend to lament it's demise when I have trouble adjusting a newer set-up so all the indexes are just so. May all your shifts be quiet ones ;-)

Phil, things have been kinda crazy around here lately. I'm hoping to get some time this week to work on the board. I've had lots of school work this semester plus I had a virus that wiped out my laptop. Luckily I had all the old FBN stuff on a flashdrive. I'll try to do the newer stuff first and then work my way back in time. Stay tuned.
